Sewing Amidst the Madness

I'm still working on the MoB suit. Things have been pretty crazy around here. Just in the last few days, DH has been especially busy with his business, younger, soon-to-be-married dd moved into dm's motor home that is parked in front of our house, older dd and dsil moved into the attached apartment, we hosted our church's worship team's monthly workshop and our washing machine drain backed up--complete with growing mount washmore and sopping wet floor.

I did get in some sewing amidst the madness. The suit is now about 75% finished. I'd hoped that a 3-day weekend (I got paid to stay home on President's day--I love my job!) would give me enough time to be 100% finished but let's not forget that I am a slow-sewer. Having to re-cut the back lining pieces (twice) and sewing in one sleeve backwards did not help. Here's the progress report:

  • Skirt: Needs taking in just slightly at the right-side waist, needs hemming and attaching the lining to the zipper.
  • Top: Complete except for lining. I covered the buttons on the top--looks very cool--very Jaqueline Kennedyesqe.
  • Flounce detail: Not yet begun--each time I hold the sheer up to the top to get an idea of how it might look I like it less and less--I'm just not sure it's going to fit in anywhere except on the purse ruffle. I love the idea of using the material because it was used at my sister's and my older daughter's wedding, so If I can make it work, I will.

Suit jacket in progress-not yet lined.

I'm going to bag the top lining as described in Sandra Betzina's Power Sewing Step-by-Step. In this method the jacket is completed--faced, hemmed, buttons on, buttonholes made, then the lining is sewn in and the whole thing is turned right-side out through a slit left in the back lining seam for that purpose. This is part of the reason it's taking me so long--I have to keep refering to various books about linings and other construction techniques. This is not just an ordinary outfit--this is my Mother of the Bride outfit--and it will be my Easter outfit and possibly my renewing-our-marriage-vows-on-our-25th-anniversary-outfit and it has to be done right.

Looking forward: I love the moment when a lined project is turned and it is suddenly done. I just love that! I will get to enjoy that moment tonight when I line the suit top.

Crafty Stirrings

My sewing stuff has been packed up for quite awhile and I miss it! It was packed up to make room for a season of extended visits by family which we have truly enjoyed so it was a worthy trade-off. Family visits will be done in a few weeks and in the meantime we decided that we'll be moving into a different house a few weeks later, so my sewing and craft things (other than sewing-related stuff I have just a few jewelry-making and scrap-booking supplies) will remain packed until it's arranged in our new abode. Focusing on family and transition decisions has taken up my mental space so it's just now, as I begin creating the vision of our next home I'm looking forward to having a sewing space again.

You Were Born in California and Have Never Been to Yosemite?

Until 2 days ago, I would have had to answer, "Nope, never been there." But now I can proudly say, "I have been to Yosemite. I have seen the highest waterfall in the United States, El Capitan, and Half Dome." We joined my brother Bobby and sister-in-law Dee Dee, along with nephew Jeremy, neice Sierra and her hubby Josiah and their little girls Havilah and Gigi for a whirlwind of a weekend that managed to be both exciting and relaxing. On Saturday Bobby & Dee Dee took us on a one-day tour of Yosemite (more pics in the Gallery ). The scenery was tremendous. If there's this much natural beauty just 4 hours from where I live, what wonders must heaven hold? I really enjoyed seeing the families from all over the world. Saturday night Darren & I saw the Eagles at Calaveras County fairgrounds. Great concert. Sunday we kicked back. We did not get enough of Yosemite though and may return this winter.
